I joined Lyle Shipping Company in June 1959 and left to pursue a new career in October 1964. Sailed on Cape York ,starting off as Navigation Cadet . Short time on Cape Nelson with Captain Love then finally back to Cape York as 3rd. Mate until I left in 1964. Sailed under Captains Fraser,Love, Allan, and Sutherland. Great times and wonderful memories albeit fairly selective nowadays!! Recognised names like Alan Hill and Ian Williamson from your guest books. Regards to anyone who may remember me. Bob

Sorry I ment to say Frank Taylor in the message below, and I wish i had found the site before he passed away, Frank took on the role of looking after me after Donald Matheson left in Antwerp. frank taught me to enjoy Black Sabbath , Deep Purple and need to have a reall good cassete deck (NEC) and where to but a wholesale electric warehouse other side of the Clyde from the Broomielaw. There is a pic of Frank whith his NEC pride and Joy. When Jim Gray finally remembered to bring me homefrom jakarta april 75 i was the only one who went home then, Frank played a song for me in the little Smoko room and gave me the tape I still have it, Dr Hook" Last Morning" the relevant lines in the song were this is the last morning i drink my coffe standing up (they Engineers would never let me deck cadet get a seat in that little room) and I am going home. geat years of my life and Jim gray is a great guy for hiring us all. I n Antwerp the Second mate lost his leg it was cut clean off by the telescopic gangway, will post that in the forum i always wondered what happened to him.

I guess all Jims cadets will find thier way back here. He packed me off to The Cape Grafton with Senior Cadet Donald Matheson Sept 74 at Crofton BC, then forgot all about me the crew paid off in Antwerp but Jim Gray forgot all about me and I did a double trip, Antwerp Jan 75 thats when Frank Mason joined loved TR6s glad to see he had a red one thatw as his dream, we would sit in his cabin and listen to his Billy Connoly tape over and over. yes that is John Brown the Senior steward in the yellow t shirt, and the little girl with Frank is I st Mate David Whites Daughter, about feb 75 , Pointe Noire Congo, then we headed for Japan, I have many funny stories to tell from the. Captain was A Fraser the piper his pic is in the gallery, I sailed with him twice GC and C Howe, 3 times with Commodore W Warden, Grafton Howe and Nelson, i was a Deck Cadet, , and GP1 in 76 on Baron Ardrossan when she had to get RentoKill onboard in Sydney a few photos of that crew as well saw someone posted about that. Must go look out my old photos.

I feel like a very old timer when reading the guestbooks as I started my apprenticeship in 1955 on the Baron Maclay built 1924. Captain Jimmy Reid and Ch. Off. Charlie Lord. First trip was just over 18 months around the world. What an adventure for a sixteen year old boy. Then the Baron Dunmore built about 1932 then two NEW ships Baron Ogilvy and the Baron Berwick. I look back now at those happy days and although it was hard at the time the training that Hogarths gave me has given me a substantial knowledge of seamanship and the gift of self discipline. I have always been proud to say that I was a Baron Line apprentice and it has been to my benefit in many quarters throughout my life. I would like to hear from the old men out there of the 1955-1960 era. Best regards to you all.
