Great site. Was with SSM from '74 to '86, cadet to mate. Had a few years ashore doing daft stuff when it all packed up then a variety of jobs at sea till ending up with Hebridean Cruises as old man from 2002 till now. A quick scan through the site has whetted the nostalga glands, great to see so many names and remember. Going to sea has never been as good as it was then. Cheers everyone. Clive(still!)Live.

Just found this site. Cadet and 3rd Mate with Lyles - one of the oldies - with them 1959 to 1963. Joined RFA 1963 and commissioned RNR ending up Lt Cdr. Came ashore late 60s, (carried on RNR) became accountant ending up Finance Director and then own consultancy company.

After a very short first trip on the P.O. car ferry MV Eagle my friend from Gravesend training school convinced me to contact SSM.
So glad I did. We both flew to Antwerp as Catering Boys to join the Cape Franklin early in 1970. A very enjoyable 5 months calling at all the usual Iron Ore Ports. A fun ship and good crew although the Chinese cook had a bit of a temper.
Later flew to Singapore to join the Cape York. Seven months sailing between Mombasa, Christmas Island and Australia. Great fun, fantastic crew including the large Somalia contingent. A rather motley bunch of officers I,m afraid. Still, mostly fond memories and grateful that the company encouraged me to stay at sea after my disapointing first trip on the Eagle.
Returned to the Pool after flying home from Mombasa and sailed with a wide range of companies.
SSM were not the best in my book but still rated very highly.

Just learnt about the site from John Drury when I phoned him a couple of days ago. It was great to read and update some news of old ship mates. What great times we all shared.
I sailed with SSM from 71 to 85 then worked ashore for a while but it did not suit. So back to sea on UK coast. I then branched out into DP work, off shore drilling, dive support and cable laying. Now on product tankers coasting to retirement. I would be delighted to hear from any old ship mates.
Merry Christmas and all the best for 2009.

I was an Eng cadet with SSM from 75 -79 and then sailed on various vessels until I did my tickets 82/83 then came ashore etc..
I look at the SSM website from time to time to see if I recognise some names and bring back some memories. Some great characters, vessels and ports..
I attended the re-union in 2006 then missed 2007 and unfortunately looks same for 2008.

Hope you all have a great day next week and if anyone knows me out there pls drop me a line-but no embarrassing shots !

Have a Merry Xmas and a happy and Healthy New Year - All the Best.

Excellent site and the names of various ships brought back memories of tales which probably were a main cause of me going to sea as well.
My father Jack McLennan sailed for and was a superintendent with SSM up until their demise.
Dad passed away early 2004 however if anyone has any photos of him would be most obliged for a copy.
