I was with the company from March '76-June '77 and sailed on Cape Rodney(maiden voyage),Cape Horn and briefly on Baron Renfrew. My first two trips were very memorable indeed and a great bunch of lads to sail with. Ended my deepsea career in Dec '98 after 21 years on the boxboats and currently have been on local ferries since. James Meechan...correct me if i'm wrong but were we at T.S.Dolphin together Aug-Dec 1975?

I was Temple Bar 3/12/73 - 26/8/74. Paid off in Amsterdam where she had an engine refit. I can honestly say she was, thanks to Dougie Maguire, the best ship I ever sailed on. He would tell different jokes and quips every night and day. We had a great cook from Grimsby, (name slips my memory like most names) But evey one from the Skipper down was brill. One thing about the "Bar" is that we could never launch the life boats, they were fast in the davits all the time I was on her, and according to the 2nd mate they were like that when she was first built. If anybody remember's me please get in touch.
Cheers
Kevin Barry

Hi Ewen
You would have served your cadetship same time as me, Bob Abercrombie, Pete Brennan, Tom Sloan, Dougie Braham, Nigel McKenzie and about another 6 of us!
We all went to GCNS for 12 months pre-sea training in 1969.
I stayed with SSM until end of 1978.
Are you coming along to the Annual Reunion this year?
Best regards
David

Just found this site today, looking for photos of my old ships which were Cape Rodney, Cape Howe, Cape Horn. starting from 1970-1972. Was a lowly Catering Boy. went up to my loft and found my old wage-slips what a buzz. R/O was Mr Macleod. some may remember me as I caught Typhood and was lifeboated out at Penzance. this was the Cape Rodney.R/O M L Bird.

Ive been following the site for a little while and thought I would add my small contribution. I joined the Cape Grafton in Amsterdam as a cabin boy following the new engine fit in Oct 73. I was nicknamed Slimcat, I remember the other cabin boy as Benny from Notts. The head chef was a rotund little chap called Angus. Fantastic crew. I recall the ship being impounded in Japan and SSM having to pay a fine to release the boat, something about illegal smoking substances. We also had our photo on the front of the Sydney papers as our ship had the highest deck cargo ever to go under Sydney Bridge before docking in Snails Bay, missed it by 6ft. Had a fantastic trip and will remember it forever.

Hi Stevie
The Baron Forbes was my first trip as a navigating cadet to sea at almost 18years of age in June 1970 then paid off end of October same year.
A model of the Baron Forbes is on display in the Glasgow Transport Museum.
Best of luck
David
