Hi!
I was a volunteer at the BSS Seamen's Mission at Wallaroo South Australia from 1974-1984 when I was in my late teens/ early 20's. We had a number of the SSM fleet call there--Baron Maclay, Cape Leeuwin, Baron Wemyss, Cape Ortegal...to name a few.
During that time I / we met some great folks and I often go over my photo albums to reminisce. It was great to find this site!

All the best to all ex SSM seafarers!

Best Wishes, Lynne

Happens to us all Mike - except I am now down to 12.5 stones. Check out the link to my photos - you may be among them.

That's right Billy, I think it was the Kinnaird although cannot rmember if it was my first or second time on her. Not quite so slender now I am afraid and the hair (or what remains of it) is almost fully grey.

Mike, were you not a blonde-haired slender cadet with me as 2/0 at least once? Think somewhere I have a photo when your sleep was rudely disturbed after a session! Glad to see you \are doing well.

I was a Deck Cadet with SSM from 1981 and made redundant following one trip as third mate in 1986. First ship was the Belhaven followed by the Pentland, Kinnaird, Rodney, Kinnaird and finally the Belhaven again. I then did a trip with Eastern Bulkers on the Taichu (would have been the Cape Wrath).
After that it was a few different companies being made redundant at regular intervals. Finally ending up in the North Sea.
A move ashore saw me as a Pilot on the River Humber from 1994 working alongside Martin barker and Peter Lightfoot until all of us ended up out on our ears after the 2002 industrial dispute and I resumed my offshore career.
I am currently Master/OIM of a 550 bed flotel operating in the North Sea. I occasionally meet ex-SSM personnel. Dave Beattie (ex-AB) is a Crane Op onboard and Gordon Gray is a rig manager in the office.
Best wishes to all who remember me.

Julie, I'm very sorry to hear the sad news of Stewart.
We handed over on the Cape Race in 1979, the only pic I've found is as above flickr link. I may have more somewhere.

Julie

The name rings a large bell - if you could email me a photo of him I will see if I have any snaps, but can't promise - I only got the photo-bug late in my career.

Hi all. Good to hear from so many visitors to the site. After all these years good memories are all we have. I only see Ken McAulay these days, 2 old 2nd mates, although he's the QHM at Faslane and I'm now a lowly cop with the MOD since retiring from Strathclyde Police in 2005. Still got a couple of years before I get my 'bus ticket' though. All that pickling in the past helps preserve for the future. Kind regards to all I've sailed with. C U. :-)

I was a Marconi R/O on the Baron Weymss in the late 1960's, mostly loading sugar in Queensland for the Far East. Sailed on Naess Sovereign, was that also a SSM ship? Am scribbling short sea-faring stories on my blog if you care to join me in a little nostalgia. Regards to all. Max
