What a wonderful surprise to see this website. It brought back happy memories of my time with SSM.I sailed on Cape Wrath,Cape Grenville, Cape Horn and Cape Grafton that I can recall. It's wonderful to know that the friendship of the personnel lives on and that there is a reunion every year.

I found the SSM website whilst looking for details of an old Liberty vessel with H line on funnel. I joined Temple Arch in April 1970 in Bristol, as a GP Catering/Deck boy. It was my first trip at sea for 6 months voyage. First port was Norfolk Virginia, loaded coal for Osaka, where we sat waiting to discharge, had day off went ashore, with apprentice had we had a wail of a time in Osaka, underground precinct, got lost on way back to ship but eventually located the berth! Sailed for Christmas Island, got St Andrews Crossed in equator ceremony, looking back a lot of fun. From Xmas Isle to Gelong with Phosphate and Port Pirie, fremantle and then sailed back to Amsterdam. Had many stops on route due to one of first commuterised engine system. I noted in Details of Temple Arch she had a new engine in 1973. From AMS to Swansea where paid off with hansom sum of £160. At 17 years the voyage was totally valuable to me, have not looked back since. Memories of scrubbing alleyways early morning in heavy swell. Spent 2 years at sea working on deck mainly and then worked in City in Lloyds. Formed my own Company in 90's chartering Russian Freighters, not unlike these ships which were modern day Tramp Steamers of their time. Great to read about the personnel that served on SSM ships.

great site,i sailed on the CAPE YORK in
1963,i joined her in south shields,we did
13 months 26 days,even though it was
an old tramp steamer,it was the best
and happiest ship i have ever sailed on.
We were out east most of the time and
We did the AUSSIE RUN to CHRISTMAS
ISLAND then FREMANTLE and up the
AUSSIE WEST COAST with a few trips
To MELBOURNE AND GEELONG.We
Went to DURBAN,JAPAN, THE FIJI
ISLANDS for sugar, the got orders for
For home,I can honestly say when we
got our orders nobody wanted to go
Home, It was one of those voyages
that you were proud to be part of as
the whole crew were on the same wave
Length We had a few bad experiences
During the voyage, but we algot over
Them and continued as best mates till
We signed off at our last port of call
GREENOCK to unload would you believe
SUGAR at TATE & LYLES. Happy Days.
